What is-Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) ISO 45001-ISO PROS #25

What Is Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) ISO 45001 / (OHSAS 18001)?

Around 6,300 people suffer from work-related injuries or illnesses every day – that’s about 2.3 million a year. The burden of occupational injuries and illnesses is significant for both employers and the wider economy, resulting in early retirement losses, absence of staff, and rising insurance premiums. ISO has introduced a global model, ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems Standards, to help businesses minimize this responsibility by offering a structure for ensuring workforce health, minimizing occupational hazards, and building healthier, secure working environments worldwide.

The ISO 45001 standard follows the same management system approach as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, including the high-level structure, which helps with the integration of management systems. It will also take into account other international standards such as OHSAS 18001, the guidelines on occupational safety and health management systems provided by the International Labor Organization, along with other different national standards.

The current OH&S template is built on the basic elements used in other ISO management systems specifications, which follows a clear Plan-Do-Check-Act ( PDCA) model that offers a structure for organizations to prepare what they need to set up, to reduce the possibility of damage.

ISO 45001 Core Functions

  • Adoption of Annex L to share structure, content, terms, and definitions at a high level with the latest ISO management standards
  • Top Leadership Engagement
  • Organizational Sense
  • Risk analysis
  • Process Method
  • Worker communication and engagement
  • Preventing sickness and death
  • Supplier and management of subcontractors

ISO 45001 is designed for usage by any organization, irrespective of the scale or complexity of its function, and can be incorporated with certain health and safety systems such as fitness and well-being for employees. It also deals with many, if not all, legal requirements in this field.

ISO 45001: What are the reasons behind its success?

Implementation of a management framework as per ISO 45001 2018 is the company’s technical and organizational judgment. The performance of the management structure must rely on guidance, commitment, and involvement from the company’s different levels and functions. Implementing and sustaining a management structure, its efficacy, and the capacity to achieve desired outcomes depends on numerous key variables, including:

  • Leadership, commitment, responsibility, and senior management accountability.
  • Top management performing and promoting a company culture that supports the different results expected in the management system.
  • Communication
  • Consultation and engagement of workers, and groups of employees where they do exist.
  • Assigning the resources necessary for its maintenance.
  • Security and safety at Work programs.
  • Effective procedures to recognize threats, mitigate risks, and maximize the potential for workplace protection and health.
  • Regular success evaluation and tracking with a view to enhancing protection and health efficiency at work.
  • Incorporating the operations system with the corporate market processes.
  • Occupational health and safety goals will be consistent with safety and welfare policies.
  • Compatibility with existing legal rules.
An organization will use the example of the positive execution of our manual to convince staff and other stakeholders that an appropriate Workplace Health and Safety Compliance Program has been put in place. The implementation of this manual will not ensure accident reduction and loss of wellbeing linked to employment for workers, it is the availability of clean and secure environments, and the enhancement of protection and wellbeing efficiency at employment that will.

The degree of specificity, sophistication, amount of recorded knowledge and the tools required to ensure a company’s management structure is effective depends on multiple variables, such as:

  • The business context.
  • The scope of the company’s workplace health and safety control system;
  • The nature of the company’s activities and the related health and safety risks at work.

A management system is required to be implemented according to ISO 45001 2018 documentation.

OHSAS 18001 / ISO 45001: The benefits of implementation

  • Fostering a secure and stable job climate
  • Reduced future injuries and increased workplace efficiency of the workforce
  • Improved procedures and other criteria
  • Demonstration of strong rates of workplace health and safety at foreign contracts or industrial growth to accommodate new companies
  • Improving the efficiency of the business processes to fulfill consumer demands and improved output
  • Your staff’s engagement and awareness of their obligations to maintain health and safety in the workplace

The migration from OHSAS 18001 into ISO 45001

The conversion cycle from one model to another may be difficult but it can help everybody within the enterprise by using preparation and commitment. Companies currently certified under OHSAS 18001 have to migrate to ISO 45001 until March 2021. The steps below will help companies migrate from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001:

  • Perform an impact appraisal/gap estimation
  • Get a copy of the ISO 45001
  • Identify the gaps that need to be resolved in the existing Corporate Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) to satisfy the new requirements.
  • Develop a Plan for Execution.
  • Ensure that all emerging needs criteria are fulfilled
  • Update the latest OHSMS to meet the current ISO 45001 specifications and include evidence of its efficacy.

In fact, workers need to be trained to incorporate improvements.

How long does the entire certification process take?

The Occupational Health and Safety Management System Certification process begins with the implementation of the system, performed by an internal specialist or an external consultant. Once the implementation is completed, it will be verified for the consistency of the system with the legislation and issue the Certificate that will be valid for 3 years and verified annually. Timing depends on the management system’s level of consistency and on the size of the business.
